Impeachment Evaporates
/K, he’s not getting impeached. But we all knew that, right?
And yeah, it’s a crime that the GOP shills wouldn’t even risk an authentic trial…for fear of risking Trump’s wrath. They somehow ignore the fact that when he famously said, “I can do anything I want”…that also includes anything he wants to do to them. But they’re willing to roll the dice. Their place in history is less important to them than their momentary status in Trump’s affections.
So much has been said about this that I hesitate to pile on. But quickly, here’s one positive thought…and one depressing one.
(1) I confess that I’m not totally disappointed that witnesses were not allowed. Of course, it’s the epitome of cowardice by the GOP…but on the other hand, it’s also a gift to Democrats. If you don’t hear the word “coverup” a million times between now and November—especially in states where GOP senators are up for reelection—the Dems don’t deserve to win.
No, calling coverup won’t sway the Trumpies. But the undecideds hate unfairness, and this is the mother of all inside jobs. “No witnesses” is a campaign gift, and gives the Dems a chance to retake the Senate, which I didn’t think was likely before. Exactly how can they do that? I’ll leave that unanswered until a post later this week citing somebody far more experienced than me.
(2) Make no mistake. The damage to America is severe. For once, there is no hyperbole in pundits who cry that democracy has changed forever. It has. Impeachment is no longer a relevant procedure. And let me put this is my own stark, scatological way: Trump and McConnell metaphorically broke into the National Archives…smashed the case and ripped the original Constitution in half…and used it for toilet paper. This is how these two traitors will be remembered. (Unless, of course, the new American monarchy outlives the memories of all of us who have watched this unfold, and write new, insanely scrubbed history books.) It’s a disgrace. But also, it seems, the new normal. All hail Big Brother!
o, we now move on to remedy #2. The last one available to us--the November election. A race the Republicans can’t win—but one the Democrats can certainly lose.
More on how to avoid that in the months to come.
